Thanks!
PS. I also sent home some extra homework with them today. We worked on a math worksheet in class today during group time, but many did not finish.
I have been out so much with some health issues, however I am back and on medication so I should survive for awhile. I came back today and the kids totally blew me away with how much they have been practicing subtracting with regrouping both at home and with guest teachers. That being said I am going to be giving them their assessment tomorrow morning. They will be tested both on vocabulary, word problems (which will be reviewed in the morning before the test), and basic algorithms. Here are some fun ways to help your student if they need a little more practice with this skill.

So many fun things have been happening over the past few weeks. We had the Jog-athon, our field trip to Seattle Children's Theater, and, of course, Halloween. Here are some pictures from each of these events. Also, just FYI, our classroom schedule has changed. Math is now in the morning and reading is takes up most of our afternoon. After working with the kids yesterday, I made the decision to move our math test to Tuesday to give some of our struggling friends a little bit more time to practice regrouping. This is a hard skill and many students struggle with this all the time. Please encourage your student to practice regrouping at home and to practice adding in order, starting with the ones and ending in the hundreds. Also FYI I will be out Monday due to a doctor's appointment. If you need anything from me before then please let me know.
Thanks, Lauren We have so much going on this week! It's crazy. The Jog-a-thon is this Friday, as well as a Skype phone call to our friends in Texas, and our math test! I added some more math resources to the printable homework page in case your kiddo needs/ wants some extra practice. For the past two weeks we have been focusing on adding with regrouping and will be finishing up this unit this week. After that we will be moving on to subtracting with regrouping. I've noticed many kids think this is "easy," but make a ton of really silly mistakes. Please remind them to be careful, show their work (even if they think it's "not cool"), and always ask for help if they need it when reading a word problem.
Thanks! Lauren Martin Global Read Aloud starts this Monday. All of second grade will be reading aloud The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane for this upcoming month. During this time we will be sharing thoughts and questions with other the second grade classes at QAE, as well as, with my mom's class in Texas! My mom, Karmen, is a third grade teacher in Denton, TX. Here is her webiste if you're curious. When I was younger, never in a million years did I think I'd end up in teaching, but I guess like mother like daughter. Anyways, we are both super excited to Skype, blog, and generally have our kiddos share with each other. This week our pictures include three student creations. (Notice our friend Jared is on page 25 of his magical fiction story about his cat. He is determined to add to it for the rest of the year.)
We are up and running officially with our brand-new (hopefully for the rest of the year) schedule. Be sure to look on our schedule page to see what our week looks like. Many of you will notice that we do not have specials on Mondays. This is due to the Music teacher being unavailable in the morning and the specials teachers (like Mr. R and Mrs. Amsel) being made available for Project Based Learning support.
This past Friday we had a new exciting activity: buddy reading with Mrs. Cryan Leary’s class. Many of the kids were confused that we were being paired up with kindergartners. They didn’t realize that this year they are the “big” kids. Mrs. Cryan Leary was kind enough to show me how buddy reading operates at Queen Anne, so this was a new experience for me as well. I believe all of the kiddos enjoyed themselves immensely. It’s pretty neat growing up. Hi all!
I am out sick today, but I wish I wasn't. It's far too soon in the school year to be sick. I guess it's like getting first year teacher sickness: you catch everything that even floats through the school. All the same, I am brand new to QAE and even though I've taught second grade before, moving from the South has been a bizarre cultural shift. People call each other by their first names here. Who knew? In the South we call each other by last name so intensely, that even some of my friends call me "Martin". This has been a change when meeting and talking with parents and other adults, so I apologize now if my first instinct isn't to introduce myself by my first name. The Southern in me isn't used to this more casual atmosphere. If you go to my homework resources I have added new list of resources that I found on Pinterest of Free and Paid for educational websites for your children to use at home, if you so choose. Again Raz Kids is being set-up, as is ST Math. As soon as I know their log-ins (if they don't already know it), I will be giving it to them, so be on the look out. Talk again soon, Lauren Martin This year is just beginning. As I write this, we have yet to meet. I am so excited for what this year will bring. How my students will change and how they will change me. Every year without fail I learn a hundred million things from every child that enters my classroom. They teach me how to be a better teacher and a better human being. I know this year will be just as crazy and incredible as the all the other years I have taught. I cannot wait to meet you and bring you along on this journey we will be taking together. Until then, Ms. Martin |
